What would be your advice for someone transitioning from relaxed to natural hair for the very first time?
Transitioning hair from its relaxed to natural state is a unique process for every individual. It requires self-reflection and a tremendous amount of self-care which is always worthwhile, yet challenging during college. I have two pieces of advice for the transition: keep it simple and remain gentle with your tresses during this period because hair in this state is very fragile, particularly at the line of demarcation between new growth and relaxed hair. Therefore, take care to detangle gently during shampooing and conditioning, try to avoid tension, and wash and condition the hair on a regular basis – at least once a week. Remember that natural hair loves water and products that moisturize are key. Scalp care is always important, and that’s where LivSo comes in. What advice do you have for college students who may feel challenged on their natural hair journey?
Students usually have limited time and money! Simple solutions to help you manage your natural hair will be key. Find brands that have sample offerings first so that you will know how the products work before purchasing larger sizes. Find a good hair and scalp product for cleansing, conditioning and moisturizing. Also make sure that you also have your favorite styling product on hand to make a few signature low-tension, low-maintenance styles work for you. Resist the urge to rely exclusively on braids and weaves during the busy college years because I have witnessed that it contributes to hair loss over time. You are your own best look, so master your look! Try and keep it simple so that you will be able to keep up with your self-care. Lastly, spend your time and money with brands who fundamentally support you and your health and beauty goals.
