I had a very close-knit group of friends in middle school and throughout most of high school. We went everywhere and did everything together, if we could help it. We were popular and got a lot of attention. We felt more than important and no one could tell us otherwise. Time went by, and as everyone started sprouting into their own person and reaping the benefits of puberty, things changed. There was no more of the genuine innocence that covered our friendships, but new-found tension and jealousy, and it got worse every day it seemed. Getting into the habit of eating healthy is hard for two reasons. One, it’s probably something you are not used to. Two, you have no idea what foods to prepare. These were the two major reasons why my journey to healthy eating was and sometimes is still difficult. Everyone has personal, distinct reasons why they want to start eating healthy or healthier. For me personally, I just felt like I was not doing my body and good by consuming grams of sugar and fat. Not that I was going to forbid myself from eating these things, I just did not want to eat them as often (only on my “cheat days” … but not every cheat day). Since I was a little girl my mom would always put relaxers in my hair because of how thick it was. My mom would style my hair with the typical little black girl plaits and twists with the colorful balls and barrettes! She thought that having my hair out was a bit too grown at my age. I can remember wanting to wear my hair out so bad because all my friends had theirs out and it would flow so nice and pretty in the wind during recess. I used to beg my mom to let me wear my hair out but she was not having it! Continue reading Jasmine’s Natural Hair Journey
