14 Things I’ll Miss About College

With only 2 weeks left before the end of my college experience, I am experiencing an array of emotions. I worked hard, had fun and had an awesome 3 ½ years at college. As I prepare for the next chapter in my life in a mere 14 days, I look back at 14 things I will definitely miss about college.

Free gym access
I already don’t really like working out, but if I can work out for free, why not do it!

Having all my friends in close proximity
After college is finished, all of your friends move back home and you can be miles and miles apart 🙁

My awesome Communication Arts teachers
My major is Comm Arts and I loved my teachers from the very beginning. You can’t ask for better professors when they really want to see you succeed and does all they can to help.

Getting daily compliments on my outfits
I love putting outfits together and I love my style. The daily compliments really make me feel super chic!

Having weekends free to sleep in
I have no work, internship, or classes on the weekends, which is awesome because I can actually get more sleep! Unfortunately things won’t be that simple in the “real world.”

Making my own schedule
I love being in charge of my own schedule and having my days and weeks be planned out just how I like them to be.

Studying abroad
Going to college allowed me to study abroad last summer for a month in Seoul, South Korea. I am really thankful for that opportunity <3

Free Wi-Fi
Even though the Wi-Fi was terrible at times, it was cool to walk around campus and have my iPad connect to WI-Fi wherever I went.

Having three month long summer vacations and one month long winter breaks
This is the best! Spending three months of no homework and classes and only having to worry about working a job. And having one month to take a break mid-semester and relax…just awesome.

Having a home away from home
College literally becomes another home for you. You spend most of your time there so of course you get a little attached to it and appreciate it when you need to take time away from your actual home.

Late night food and Walmart runs with friends
Running to Sonic, Waffle House, Taco Bell, and Walmart late at night is always spontaneous, fun, and yummy. I will miss those late night random car rides.

On campus ceremonies, events, and dances
My college, Hood College, has so many traditions and fun events that take place usually on a weekly basis. Not being able to attend those events after this semester is definitely going to be a little sad.

My internship at a fashion boutique named Velvet Lounge
I loved my internship at VL, and it definitely helped me realize that I want to go into the fashion world. I will miss the people there and the shopping!

Fun PE classes like badminton, yoga, ballet, and tai chi
The PE classes I took were all amazing and taught me that working out can be enjoyable and creative.

There’s so much more I will miss about college, but I think this is a pretty good list. Now to finish these next 2 weeks strong!

Monday Morning Inspiration

Here are a few uplifting celebrity quotes and how you can apply them to your daily life. #loveyourlife

“If you are feeling low, don’t despair. The sun has a sinking spell every night, but it comes back up every morning.” – Dolly Parton

What Ms. Parton is saying here is that it is okay to be sad for a season because that depression or sadness shall past. Brighter days are in your future and you may not see them right now, but they are surely coming soon.

“In order to be irreplaceable one must always be different.” – CoCo Chanel

Why would you want to be like everybody else? You should strive to be different and unique and be the best you you can be. Coco is telling you that you will leave your mark on this Earth by standing out and above the crowd. If you do that, you can’t be beat!

“Nothing is impossible, the word itself says ‘I’m possible’!” – Audrey Hepburn

What Audrey Hepburn is telling you is to follow your dreams no matter what. Don’t let any dream seem to big or too small. If a dream seems impossible, remember that it actually is possible. Work hard at it and don’t let anything or anyone stop you from reaching your goals and dreams.

“Smile and let everyone know that today, you’re a lot stronger than you were yesterday.” – Drake

Believe it or not, smiling helps you feel happier and more confident. Whether you are having the worst day or the best day, try to smile through the struggle. Who knows, your smile might bring joy to someone else who is struggling as well. Drake believes that you are stronger than you were yesterday and so should you!

“I don’t know what my path is yet. I’m just walking on it.” – Olivia Newton-John

I think that this is a perfect quote for college students or college grads. It’s terrifying and stressful figuring out what you want to do with your life, but sometimes a path is laid out in front of you. All you have to do is walk the path, hope for the best, stay motivated, and truly believe that you will reach that final destination at the end of the path.

Life After the Protective Style

If you have ever worn a protective style, wigs, Marley twists, box braids, etc., then you should know that bittersweet feeling of taking off the wig or taking out the twists or braids.

This is a bittersweet moment because hopefully you loved wearing your protective style and it made you feel different and you knew your hair was

protected and growing, and that’s the “sweet” part. The “bitter” part comes in when you realize you have to spends hours taking out your extensions and possibly have to go back to styling your hair every day.

Just because it is a bittersweet task, doesn’t mean you should never want to wear protective styles or you should leave your protective style in a ridiculously long time, it just means you have to be mentally prepared when you are getting ready to take out your braids or twists.

Why do you have to be mentally prepared, you ask? Because a lot of questions run through your head, just like they ran through mine when I took out my Marley twists this past Sunday.

Questions like:

Before and After

“What if I don’t look as pretty with my braids/twists out?”

“Am I still going to like my natural hair when I take them out?”
“What if my hair didn’t grow as much as I wanted it to?”
“Is it possible that I damaged my hair?”
“Should I get another protective style right away?”

And many, many, more, but these are just a few thoughts that ran through my mind. Here is where the mental preparedness comes in…you have to be able to combat those semi-negative questions with uplifting and positive answers like the ones listed below.

First question response: You have to know you look beautiful with or without your protective style.

Second question response: You should always love your natural hair, no matter the texture, length, etc. Your natural hair is amazing!

Third question response: You have to remember that your hair will grow. Don’t get too caught up in length where you start neglecting health. Healthy hair will grow no matter what.

Fourth question response: If you know that you moisturized and conditioned your scalp and hair while it was under your protective style, then you have nothing to worry about! You hair is not damaged at all.

Fifth question response: You shouldn’t get a protective style right away, especially not if you want to do it because you feel like you don’t look as good while wearing your natural hair. Give your hair a break and re-embrace your own hair!

Fall Fashion Necessities

Every woman has a lot of clothing in her closet but sometimes you don’t know what to wear for certain seasons. Here are a few items you should definitely have in your closet for the fall weather.

A plaid flannel

Flannels can be dressed up with a cute skirt, tights, and tall boots or dressed down with a pair of jeans and flats. Not only can they be worn by themselves, but they also make for a perfect layering piece under a jacket or coat.

Fall colored lipstick

As the weather gets cooler, I believe that your lipstick should get deeper and darker. Fall colored lipstick consists of deep shades of red, orange, brown, and even dark purple. I have my eyes on some dark purple lipstick this fall because I would love to try something new.

Sweater leggings

Sweater leggings are not only colorful and comfy, they also keep your legs really warm. They are perfect for the fall when paired with a sweater or cardigan and they will even keep you warm and cozy during the winter months.

Tall boots

Tall boots literally can be paired with any and every thing. You can wear them with dresses, skirts, pants, leggings, and the list goes on and on. Tall boots come in a variety of colors such as browns, blacks, grays, and beige. They also come in a variety of lengths where some can stop above the knee, others on the knee, and some a little below the knee. It’s your preference!

Puffball beanie

This isn’t really a necessity for the fall, but they are just super cute! They are perfect for those lazy hair days and can add adorableness to almost any look. They also come in a variety of colors and styles.

I hope you consider adding some of these items to your fall wish list if you haven’t brought them already!

Enjoy your week and the lovely fall weather!

Makeup Free Week

Happy Monday! Are you up for a challenge?

You should try and go makeup free for the entire week! Here’s 5 reasons why you should take this awesome challenge:

1) It will save you time
Normally, doing makeup in the morning can take thirty minutes to an hour or longer before you go to work or run out to do your errands. Why not spend that extra thirty minutes or hour getting a little more sleep or eating breakfast!

2) It will allow your natural beauty to showmakeup 2
By wearing makeup, your natural beauty is hidden under your cosmetics. Instead of wearing makeup, let the world see your natural rosy cheeks, your long eyelashes, and even show off your freckles! Being natural is beautiful.

3) This will give you younger looking and healthier
Some makeup clogs your pores and makes it difficult for your skin to keep its PH balance. If you have sensitive skin, makeup can actually make you get acne. Letting your face breathe and take a break for a week from makeup can leave your skin glowing and look brighter than ever!

4) It can save you money
Imagine not buying any lipstick, mascara, blush, or even foundation for a week or two. Over time that can save you a lot more money which you could invest in other items or activities. Maybe reduce buying makeup to twice every couple of weeks and little by little try to spend less on your makeup collection!

5) It will send a positive message
If you have a daughter or younger girl that looks up to you, seeing yo u go makeup free for a week is a positive outlook. She will see you being natural while still looking good without makeup and maybe follow in your same footsteps.

There’s nothing wrong with wearing makeup! Wearing it from time to time can actually make you feel prettier and maybe even a bit classier. Just remember to love your natural beauty as well as your beautiful made up face!

What Can I Eat To Get Healthy Hair?

Everyone wants strong and healthy hair. Washing, conditioning, and moisturizing your hair is one way to keep your locks luscious, but there’s more you can do! A lot of your healthy hair journey comes from what you eat as well.

Remember that good food = healthy hair. Add these 5 foods to your diet and see how healthy your hair can be.

1) Sweet Potatoessweet potatoes
Sweet Potatoes are filled with Beta Carotene antioxidants which helps prevent dry and dull hair. Beta Carotene from food is converted to vitamin A, which promotes cell growth, including hair cells.
Other Beta Carotene enriched foods: carrots, cantaloupes, pumpkins, dark green lettuce
                                                                     oysters

 2) Oysters
I know some of you may be against eating oysters because they seem gross,     but they aren’t half bad! Oysters are rich in Zinc, which helps tissue growth     and repair and that includes hair growth. Not eating enough Zinc filled       foods     can result in extreme hair loss.

Other lean poultry: chicken, turkey

eggs4) Eggs
Not only are eggs high in protein, but they also contain large amounts of a B vitamin called Biotin, which is one of the most essential nutrients for a healthy scalp and hair growth. Some people actually put raw eggs directly on their hair to help condition it.

Set Your Own #RelationshipGoals

Everyone has seen pictures on social media of couples hiking, riding bikes, working out together, hugging and kissing each other, and the list can go on and on. Most of the time those pictures have the caption “#relationshipgoals.”

A lot of individuals and couples strive to meet these relationship goals they see across social media. I say, make you own #relationship goals!

Each relationship is different. What works for one couple may not work for your relationship. You have to find what interests you and your significant other and just do it!

Maybe traveling isn’t your favorite activity to do, but maybe you are very creative and artsy. Instead of trying to travel the globe because you saw that was someone on Facebook’s relationship goal, why not have a cute and cozy arts and craft night at home with your partner.

Relationship goals don’t have to be huge, elaborate, and/or expensive. A walk in the park, a nice night indoors making cookies, or even a Netflix movie marathon can be a relationship goal you set.

The only relationship goals that should be standard across the board is finding someone who can make you happy, treat you fairly, and love you unconditionally.

Now I’m not saying that you can’t have the same relationship goals as other couples. I know I do, but majority of the goals should be based on your own likes and interests.

You should be able to have fun in your relationship and be able to communicate with one another about any and everything.

You may not know how to create your own #relationshipgoals. These simple steps to help you out:

1) Make a list of traits/activities that are important to you or fun to do when in a relationship
2) Make sure your goals are reachable
3) Ask your significant other to help you set goals for your relationship
4) Don’t set too many goals, so you won’t get overwhelmed
5) Celebrate when you meet your goals!

What are some of your #relationshipgoals? Know that your goals can change over time and that’s not a bad thing!

Dress for Success…Stylishly!

Don’t ever think that you can’t look professional while looking stylish! Just because a pantsuit, slacks and a button up, or a business-like dress is required in a workplace, does not mean you have to lose your sense of style. I am a fashion rebel, so I will still look professional and presentable, but I will make sure my personality shines through as well.

Neutral colors such as gray, brown, and black are popular colors in the business world because they are calmer than bold prints and bright colors. I believe that you can wear a bold print or a bright color and still look professional; I do it all the time!

If you are a colorful person, like me, you might want to wear a sunny yellow blazer to an interview. Pair that yellow blazer with a black sheath or shift dress, and the outfit looks classy, professional, and still has your personal touch.
Accessories are another great way to turn your business attire from “Plain Jane” to “Stylish Sue!” One of my favorite ways to accessorize my professional look is with a clutch handbag.

A clutch is usually a tiny bag that is small enough to fit in your hand or under your arm. They come in all shapes, sizes, and colors and they add chicness to an already super sleek and sophisticated outfit.

Businesses that encourage creativity, will probably want you to dress modern, trendy, and colorful. Figuring out what not to wear in a business environment, is a lot easier than figuring out what to wear.

Anything that you wouldn’t want your granny, mother, or pastor seeing you wearing, you probably shouldn’t wear it to work or to an interview.

Once you know you personality and what colors make you feel the most confident, you can easily include those colors into your professional looks. I have a colorful personality, so it is easy for me to add my personality into what I wear because I just add color.

Whatever your personality is, just remember to create outfits that make you feel beautiful and confident. Whenever you need some inspiration about how to dress in the business world, think about this phrase, “Dress for the job you want, not the job you have.”

Protective Styling 101

Recently I decided to jump aboard the protective style train. This was my first time getting any type of extensions in my hair.DSC_0015~2

I did a lot of research on Pinterest and Google to find the right protective style for me. I decided to go with Marley twists. It was definitely a good decision!

What is protective styling?

Protective styling is when you give your hair a 1-2 month break from styling. You won’t be able to constantly have your hands in your hair because it will be under a protective style, which is a good thing. You can keep your hair in twists, braids, or even under a natural wig.

What do some styles look like?
protective styles
How do you take care of your protective style?

Some basic items you need to wrap your hair at night are a satin bonnet and satin scarf. To moisturize your hair you can use the LOC method.
Liquid– mix water, a leave in conditioner, and a cream moisturizer in a spray bottle and spritz on hair daily
Oil– use any type of oil (castor, jojoba, coconut, etc.) to moisturize your scalp
Cream– use styling cream (Shea moisture is my preference!) to keep the scalp and hair soft and beautiful

Why should you try protective styling?

1) It gives your natural hair a much needed rest
2) Allows you to try out a totally new look
3) Wearing protective styles helps your hair grow and retain length

Don’t be scared to step outside of the box and try out a protective style. Look at images online and watch YouTube videos to get hair inspiration.

You can also ask other natural girls you know for advice on ones they tried out. Just go for it and rock your new hair!
